El cielito/LittleSky (Argentina/France 2004) Félix is a juvenile drifter making his way through the interior of Argentina when a young rancher offers him work. As the owner of a farmstead that saw better days when his father was still alive, Roberto now relies on his wife to provide with her incessant work the bare minimum for the survival of the couple and Their baby. Unable to resolve the tension, distrust and resentment leading to violence in the marriage, Félix responds to the baby’s need for protection. The bond developing between the young Félix and Chango, the baby boy he is caring for, carries the narrative forward with some of the most endearing moments ever depicted in film about the multifaceted potential of masculinity and parenting.
Director and co-screen writer: María Victoria Menia

HOLA FESTIVAL UPDATE

The Board of Directors of HoLa Hora Latina has announced that the dates of the 2015 HoLa Festival will be Saturday evening, September 26th and Sunday afternoon, September 27th.   The HoLa Festival is an annual event held every fall since 2000 during Hispanic Heritage Month and has grown steadily over the years.  Last year’s HoLa Festival 2014 drew around 30,000 people – many from outside the Knoxville area.

The HoLa Festival is a celebration of Hispanic culture and features Hispanic music, dance, food, and other cultural entertainment.  The event, that will take place at Market Square in downtown Knoxville, is open to the public without charge and parking in the adjacent city parking lots will be free.

While details of the event are still being finalized, HoLa is pleased to announce the confirmation of the Hispanic salsa band “Jimmy Bonilla” for Saturday evening and Marcel Portilla Band “Reverbnation” for Sunday.  “Salsa Knox” will be a featured dance group Sunday afternoon performing an exhibition of authentic salsa as well as offering salsa lessons.  Another very unique dance ensemble, “Ballet Folklorico Mexican Tradition of Julio Ruiz” from North Carolina will present two performances Sunday afternoon of authentic and very colorful Mexican cultural music and dances.

New this year -  the tradition Festival of Nation Parade featuring the dress and flags of many Hispanic countries, will process down Gay Street Sunday afternoon so that everyone may get a better look at the parade.  Also, the Festival will include a significant additional number of food and craft vendors as well as activities for the children.

The Hispanic population of Knox County has increased rapidly over the past few years. As of 2013, Hispanics total 3.7% of the total population and estimated to be much greater now.  While celebrating Hispanic culture is a prime focus of the event, it is a very special and important opportunity for all people of East Tennessee to get a better understanding and appreciation of the culture of local Hispanic people.

For further information about the HoLa Festival,  call the HoLa office at 865 335-3358

                                   Art at Casa HoLa
by Angela Masini, Chair, HoLa First Friday/Art Program
In keeping with HoLa’s mission of promoting Hispanic culture, HoLa’s art program
brings to our community art by Hispanic artists or art which in some way highlights
aspects of the Hispanic culture. Typically a new exhibit is installed for the first Friday of
the month. This “First Friday at Casa HoLa” can consist of paintings, graphic art,
photography, ceramics, crafts or folk art. Though most of our artists reside in the East
Tennessee area, we are fortunate to have the collaboration of talented artists in all of
Tennessee. In some cases, our exhibits have attracted artists from other states and
even other countries.
We invite the general public to attend Casa HoLa’s opening reception on the First Friday
of the month, from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM. All the exhibits remain open for viewing
during most of the month, from Tuesday to Friday, 9:30 until 4:00. Hours are subject to
change, so guests are encouraged to call ahead the HoLa main number, 865-335-3358.
Artists interested in exhibiting their work are invited to submit the “Artist Application”.
We welcome your comments and suggestions!

MIGUEL A ARAGON Featured artist at Casa HoLa in March

Miguel A. Aragon was born and raised in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.  His work is included in the books "A survey of Contemporary Printmaking" by Matthew Egan, Michael Ehlbeck, and Heather Muise; and in Arte Tejano: de campos, barrios y fronteras by Cesareo Moreno.  In 2012, he received the artist of the Year in Printmaking Award by the Austin Visual Arts Association and the Austin Critics Table Award for Artist of the Year.

Along with other numerous awards, his work has been exhibited and reviewed nationally and internationally and have been included in numerous public and private collections.

Currently, Aragon lives in Brooklyn where he maintains a studio and is an Assistant Professor in Printmaking at the College of Staten Island.

His artist statement:  "Thousands of people die in drug-related violence every year in Mexico;  using processes that are reductive in nature, I am exploring what it means to see, live, and cope with images of incomprehensible violence.  By using metaphors and visual metonymies to tie together process and subject matter, I explore the idea of perception, memory, and transformation   My work is derived from a need to find meaning in these brutal events that repositions the corpse in our field of vision, reminding us that our physical existence is finite."

Día de los Muertos - Day of the Dead

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a traditional Mexican and Central American celebration of ancient origin. Families visit the cemetery, or prepare "ofrendas" or "altars" at home, in remembrance of their deceased loved ones, and throw parties in their honor. Some people dress up or get elaborate face makeup.

Come to the Emporium to experience our annual Day of the Dead celebration, sponsored by HoLa, Hora Latina. Vote for your favorite altar, decorate sugar skulls, and participate in the Day of the Dead costume contest. There will also be pan de muerto, traditional hot chocolate, face painting, and more! Sugar skulls will also be available for purchase.
